POC (Proof of concept)

A Proof of Concept (POC) is a focused internal exercise designed to verify that a specific technical theory or method can be implemented as intended. Unlike an MVP, which is built for end-users, a POC is primarily a tool for development teams to explore complex requirements, such as integrating a new third-party API or testing a specific algorithm. The goal is to confirm that the core logic is sound; visual aesthetics and user experience are usually secondary at this stage, as the focus remains on raw functionality.

By starting with a POC, organizations can avoid the high costs of a failed implementation. If the exercise proves that a concept is technically impossible or requires excessive resources, the team can pivot or rethink their approach without having wasted significant design and development time. This provides the empirical evidence needed to move into the more expensive phases of the product lifecycle with a clear understanding of the project's technical requirements.
