Motion design
In modern digital products, motion design is a functional tool rather than a purely decorative one. It provides spatial context by showing the user where a new window came from or where a file went after it was saved. This helps maintain the user's mental model of the application, preventing them from feeling lost during rapid transitions. Smooth, intentional movement bridges the gap between different states of the interface, creating a sense of narrative and flow.
Motion also serves as a powerful way to direct attention. By animating a specific element, such as an alert badge or a call-to-action button, designers can guide the user toward the most important information on the screen. However, effective motion design must be subtle and purposeful; over-animating can lead to a distracting experience that slows the user down rather than helping them.
